š¾Beginning Litter Box Training! š¶ (January 2025 litters)
Updated: Feb 26
Our Birdie & Tree littersĀ have officially reached 3 weeks old, and that means itās time to introduce an
important new stepālitter box training!Ā š
At this age, puppies are becoming more mobileĀ and naturally start leaving their sleeping area to potty. This is the perfect time to introduce a designated potty spaceĀ to help set them up for success!
š Why Start Litter Box Training at 3 Weeks?
š¾ Encourages Clean Sleeping AreasĀ ā Puppies instinctively donāt want to soil their bedding, so introducing a litter box helps them learn to potty in the right place.
š¾ Makes Housebreaking EasierĀ ā Early litter box training teaches them surface preferenceĀ (where they should potty), making the transition to outdoor potty training much smoother for their future families!
š¾ Supports Natural DevelopmentĀ ā Around this age, puppies naturally start moving away from their sleeping area to relieve themselves. The litter box provides a structured way to encourage that instinct.
š How We Introduce Litter Box Training
āØ Setting Up the BoxĀ ā We use a shallow litter tray filled with pellets (like Timothy or Alfalfa pellets)Ā that mimics natural outdoor textures.
āØ Gradual IntroductionĀ ā At first, the puppies may step in and sniff around, and thatās totally normal! As they start using it naturally, we gently encourage them by placing them in the litter box after waking up and after nursing.
āØ Keeping It CleanĀ ā Puppies are much more likely to use the litter box if it's clean, so we make sure to scoop it regularlyĀ to reinforce good habits.
āØ Positive ReinforcementĀ ā Puppies learn best through experience, so as they begin using the litter box correctly, they gain confidence in their new potty routine.
š¶ What to Expect in the First Few Days?
ā Some puppies will catch on quickly, while others may take a little longer.ā A few curious sniffers and diggersātotally normal at this stage!ā Occasional accidents outside the box (thatās okay, theyāre learning!).
š¾ Whatās Next?
As they continue to grow, they will get better at choosing the litter box on their own, and by the time they go home, they will have a solid understanding of potty routines, making housebreaking much easier!
We love watching our puppies grow and learn, and we canāt wait to see them progress in this new phase! Future puppy familiesāthis early training will set your pup up for success in their new homes!Ā š
